University Graphic Systems is a team of 11 student managers who operate a print and design services company located on the Cal Poly campus. We engage with Graphic Communication students to educate them on the UGS workflow and to prepare them for future leadership roles. We strive to learn new skills that contribute to our development as young industry professionals.

The General Manager is responsible for the administration of UGS finances including budgets, reports and payroll coordination. The General Manager meets with Cal Poly Corporation Administrators, leads management meetings and maintains relations with the GrC faculty, staff, and advisory board.
The Customer Service Manager works directly with clients to ensure continued business satisfaction. The Customer Service Manager is responsible for quotes, applications to print, completion of job dockets, billing and customer surveys.
The Estimating Manager is directly responsible for translating what the customer wants into a printable entity and creating a monetary value. The estimator is also responsible for ordering supplies and keeping track of inventory.
The Prepress Manager is responsible for file manipulation, proofmaking, and plateburning for UGS Commercial jobs. The Prepress Manager will be responsible for training, scheduling, and management of paid prepress employees that will assist the manager in regular, high volume jobs such as the Mustang News.
The Digital Production Manager is responsible for operating the digital printing equipment and completeing any commercial print jobs that come through the digital printing department.
The Offset Production Manager is responsible for coordinating production within the Web department. Responsibilities include scheduling production crews, overseeing production and the printing of jobs, maintaining and enforcing safety procedures and cleanliness in the web building, and maintaining open communication with the Mustang News staff.
The Bindery Manager is responsible for all jobs requiring binding or finishing, as well as the scheduling of employees in the Bindery department. The finishing processes include cutting, folding, binding, foil stamping/embossing, scoring, and boxing/packing.
The Design Reproduction Manager is responsible for creating original artwork for clients needing graphic design, assisting the Prepress Manager in retouching client artwork, and helping the Marketing Manager develop campaigns to raise awareness of UGS.
The Sales & Marketing Manager is responsible for overseeing marketing initiatives which include: sales collateral design and development, marketing awareness campaigns, marketing research, web site maintenance and development, interdepartmental marketing, and product development.
The Continuous Improvement manager is responsible for implementing and promoting both lean and sustainable practices in the UGS workflow. She maintains FSC certification (CoC), while experimenting in developing sustainable production practices.
The Specialty Printing Manager is responsible for producing all screen printing jobs and managing the Print and Copy store. Other responsibilities include working with the i-cut to produce any flexographic jobs, as well as experimenting with new and emerging print technologies to help expand UGS’s markets.
